ASJA (she/her) Aerial & Dance Instructor
Hi, I’m Asja (she/her)!
I have been teaching at SPDS since January of 2023 and loving every minute of it!
As a kid, I was obsessed with gymnastics and climbing on the monkey bars of any playground I could find. As an adult, I am still quite fond of these activities and was ecstatic when I found pole and aerials through SPDS because they make all my youthful circus dreams come true! If you were the "monkey" on the playground growing up, aerials may be just what your inner child is looking for (think: floating jungle gym)!
I took my first pole class in 2019 and quickly fell in love with the studio and all it has to offer! Of course, 2020 impacted our ability to practice in person, but I took that opportunity to try out as many virtual dance classes through the studio as possible, inevitably falling in love with dance classes like sensual movement and chair. Once we could train in person again (near the end of 2020), I also began taking aerial hoop classes, which stole my heart immediately! Once we, as a community, felt comfortable sharing equipment again, I added aerial cube to my apparatus repertoire. I love teaching both aerials and chair dance because they are all incredibly fun forms of strength and cardio training, as well as major confidence boosters!
Throughout the years, I continued to take as many dance classes as I could, which led to my first studio showcase performance in 2022 as a member of fellow instructor Beth's group chair dance routine. In 2023, I performed my first solo on the double point aerial cube and have realized that I love coming up with and performing choreography to my favourite songs, as well as find so much inspiration and encouragement from all of the other performers at each showcase I partake in! The instructor/staff team and the participant members of the SPDS community are genuinely some of the most uplifting and caring individuals that I have ever met. I strive to uphold and extend this sense of belonging and encouragement in every class I teach or take.
Can't wait to see you in class or around the studio!
