When You Are Forced To Take A Break - Part 1

Hey guys!

Sheri here. I have missed you all so much. I haven’t been able to teach at the studio since last spring due to a really bad back injury at work. I have missed pole and the entire SPDS community so much during this. With everything going on in the world right now, I thought writing a blog post about being forced to take an extended break from the pole/aerials etc, could be something we all could relate to at this point. Since I’ve had to step away for an extended period of time, perhaps some of the ways I have learned to cope with this could be helpful for the entire community. I’m not saying we have to look for the positive in everything, or always try to make the best of an undeniably crappy situation. This sucks and it’s hard. We all have different circumstances and are going through different things during this time. But if missing the studio and your classes is a part of your struggle now, here are some things I’ve found helpful.

I always knew pole was a huge and important part of my life, but I didn’t realize how much it meant to me until it was taken away. Not only is it my favourite way to stay active, but it’s also a creative and emotional release, and my community with most of my best friends. I have really struggled with not being able to pole for almost an entire year, so if you are feeling really down or lost not being able to as well, I understand!

The first thing I found helpful was to focus on what I could do, instead of what I couldn’t. I know most people don’t have a home pole or aerial device, so practicing on your favourite apparatus just might not be an option right now. But there are still so many things you can do! SPDS is offering tones of free online Zoom classes every week! For nearly all of them, you don’t need any equipment! How awesome is that? You can still condition, dance, and stretch with your instructors and buddies safely at home! If anyone else has an injury, maybe some of those classes aren’t good options for you right now. I found going walks around my neighbourhood helpful. I also focused on some exercises my body could still do. I have a lot of issues with my pelvis and hips, so instead of doing lower body type work outs, I’ve found I can do things like pushups without any pain. Sometimes it takes awhile, and some trial and error, but hopefully there is still some types of movements that you can enjoy right now!

Stay Tuned For Part 2!
